There is an aroma of history in the air in Kandy, although the city is not as steeped in antiquity as the cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Kandy became a capital only in the fourteenth century and that, in a country with a recorded history that goes back to the sixth century before Christ, is pretty modern.
There is probably no mountain anywhere more famous than Sri Pada - Adam's Peak (7,362 ft.) for non-mountain reasons than this.
Nuwara Eliya, 48km from Tea Trails, was first conceived as a health resort - a 'hill station' in British colonial jargon - about 1825. After Nuwara Eliya was 'discovered' by a British hunting party in 1819, Sir Samuel Baker, the well-known explorer, fell under its spell in 1846 and planning to make it his home, imported to Nuwara Eliya all the appointments of an English country town, including a bailiff, Hereford and Durham cows, and even a blacksmith and a forge.
Horton Plains national park, Sri Lanka's highest plateau, is characterised by a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, covered in upper montane forest and wet patana grassland at an altitude of 2,100-2,300 metres (6,900-7,500ft). It is a popular tourist destination and is situated 32 kilometres (20mi) from Nuwara Eliya.
Uda Walawe National Park Is a major eco tourism destination in Sri Lanka. This 30,821 hectare dry zone game park's main attraction is the many elephants (about 400 in total). It is not unusual to see whole herds of adults and young elephants feeding or bathing and playing in the water.
